TRAIL MAPS

(Ignore color-coded geometric markings.  The best runs are hidden gems.)

RESORTS: No reason to consolidate every ski map ever created from scratch, when an absurdly comprehensive list already exists.  Good luck finding a global destination with more than 3 lifts which isn’t available in their 14k+ image online database.  Also, the historical maps are neat to review if you’ve visited the same resort over multiple years.

BACKCOUNTRY #1: High quality backcountry maps, complete with key information like terrain, topography, suggested ascents, and classic ski routes. Both foldable waterproof paper, and downloadable digital, maps are available.

BACKCOUNTRY #2: Access to a network of detailed topographic maps that can be used for a wide variety of outdoor activities.  The free option uses standard cell phone GPS to track routes and statistics in real time while touring, the paid version includes fancy topo shading, and downloadable maps for offline use.

aRTWORK: The man, the myth, the legend.  For those of us who still find beer-soaked paper trail maps in our pocket after getting home from a weekend ski trip, feel free to peruse this site to check out the art in its unwrinkled, less smelly, form.  This hand painted trail map style, which originated pre-GPS, and pre-drone, still provides a ton of mountain geography insight.
